NaNoWriMo – National Novel Writing Month – the time when you do 1667 words or more, (yeah right) and at the end of the month you have a novel. It doesn’t have to be a perfect novel, it doesn’t have to be earth shattering but it does need to be 50,000 words long.
First, I have never done this before. NaNoWriMo was started back in 1999. Last year they had over 325,000 participants and this year there are over 800 locations including libraries, book stores and community centers that are holding write-in and other events. In the Chicagoland area there are 2,087 participating novelists • 16,230,007 words written • 7,776 average wordcount • $4,275.00 donated so far this year
The website http://www.nanowrimo.org has a wealth of information, forums, and events.
So. I have been able to accomplish a few goals – I have written over 11,000 words in eleven days in my second novel of my police procedural murder mystery – The Canyon Clinic Murders. I have made a few friends on the site. I have completed my profile and a synopsis of the novel. Yippie me.
However, real life interrupts my progress at every turn. I am supposed to be at the 18,000 word mark. And although the story is flowing out well, I am not sure that I will make up the difference in time. I might have an over cooked turkey this year – because I will be trying to write and cook at the same time. Wish me luck.
