The Skinny is the jazz of poetry, an American form developed by Truth Thomas. Like Japanese Haiku, it is short, sweet and flexible. Unlike Haiku, I don’t have to count syllables. I do have to count the lines, repeat line one at the end (line 11) and use the same line (or word) for line two, six and ten. I’ve found that I can write these from one thought, riff on one word and feel exhilarated when done.
